cominatrix asked: [Cont.] my question to you is, [and let me preface with the fact that acts such as those were obviously horrible and the sentiments that lead to them still exist, that i know] i ask, is it inappropriate to think that some of the people who are saying "get over it" are perhaps not using those exact words and are actually meaning something more akin to "please do not continue to be angry with me for the sins of people i never knew with whom i share no more than skin color?"

Thank you for the compliment.

It’d be an understatement to say that I grew very disillusioned with the Tumblr SJ crowd, and considered quite a few of those folks my friends. I wrote about this subject last February, and one of those assholes had the nerve to call me racist for being proud that my family had adopted black children.

But, you’re right.  The people these bullies expect to account for their ancestors’ crimes had nothing whatsoever to do with them, other than circumstances of birth. Their actions put them in the same boat as people who burn crosses on their neighbors’ lawns, and I have a hard time managing the patience it takes to approach such people civilly.

So now I make fun of it.

Really, there’s no place in the discussion of racism for blanket hatred, regardless of where that hatred is directed.
