It’s a sad day in Kansas City.

Folks, all you can really do is hug your babies tighter.  Tell them you love them every day and do everything you can to show it.

In just one week the city of Saint Petersburg could pass an outrageous bill that will make it a crime to read, write, speak or meet to discuss anything considered “Gay”. St. Petersburg is one of Russia’s number one tourist destinations. That’s why an international storm of bad publicity will force the Governor to think twice about the cost of signing this bill.

For those of you who missed it, there was an important article in Rolling Stone recently about a town in Michele Bachmann’s home district where a school passed a similar gay gag order.  What this policy ushered in was a protected status for jesus freaks who wanted to bully those they perceived as sinners and a rash of teen suicides.
Does anyone really think it’s a moral action to degrade someone so severely under the law that they feel they have to off themselves?

In memory of Jacob Rogers, 18

    gaywrites:

Jacob Rogers, a high school senior from Tennessee, ended his life yesterday after enduring years of bullying at school.

Friends say classmates tormented him with anti-gay slurs and left behind notes including passwords to online accounts, so friends and investigators could see evidence of the harassment he endured.

Bloggers started a fund to help his family pay for the funeral and very quickly reached their goal amount of $5,000. Extra money will go to the GLSEN, the It Gets Better Project, the Trevor Project and the ACLU.

Please get help if you need it. Look out for your friends. Stand up for strangers. We cannot handle the loss of another innocent life. This community needs you - these kids need you. Prayers go out to Jacob’s family and friends.

This is why equal rights are important.  Until queer people are seen as cultural equals to heterosexuals, we’ll never see the end of horrible events like this.

Teacher posts on Facebook calling for more homosexual teenagers to kill themselves.

    Despicable.

The teacher’s name is Jim Whitney.

You can email him expressing your thoughts.

If you would like to phone Dr. Kerry Sachetta, the principal of Joplin High School, to ask for Whitney’s dismissal here is the number. Remember, civil requests often work best. 417-625-5230 ext. 3002

Or if you’d like to recommend this to the President of the Board of Education, Ashley Micklethwaite, you can email her here.

    Please reblog.

I’d encourage everyone who cares about teens, bullying, and homophobia to email the district and call for Mr. Whitney’s firing in light of his lack of shame and destructive views.

Meet Jade. She killed herself three days after making this video.. Teenage suicide accounts for 31,000 suicides a year in the U.S, making it the 3rd leading cause of suicide. Worldwide, nearly one million people commit suicide every year.. more than those murdered or killed in war. Think before you say something hurtful to someone else. It may look like they’re okay, but they’re not. Words are more powerful than you think. Repost this not just for Jade, but for every teenager who is going through what she went through. You can help save a life. And wasn’t she just fucking gorgeous?

    ____

Hug your kids every day, folks.  Ask them questions.  Be interested in their lives.  Don’t expect their schools or television to do your parenting for you.  If 2011 has taught us anything, it’s that too many parents know too little about the anguish their kids are experiencing.

this is jade. she’s gorgeous. and she should have been able to live a normal teenage life. but, because of some of her classmates, she isn’t with us anymore. jade killed herself 3 days after creating this video. If you’re against bullying; reblog this. jade would want people to know the dangers of bullying and the consequences it leaves people with. bullies are people who are angry with their lives, so find a way to take it out on other people. some of them go too far, which causes people just like jadeto take their lives just to stay out of the misery they are being put through. suicide can be prevented, we all just need to try.

I know I say this every time this comes up, but parents, hug your babies every day.  We cannot read minds, and you’ll never know when they need that comfort.

Report: Teen Commits Suicide After Facebook Taunts - Yahoo! News

    Kameron Jacobsen

Stories like this break my heart.

Even when I was young and homophobic myself, I still had it in my heart to defend the only outwardly gay person in my school. (Even physically, in some cases) Jesus life story demonstrates that he was very cool with sticking up for people that the world was ready to cast aside.  Thankfully, I later made friendships with LGBT folks and learned that all of the crazy things I’d learned in church were not only ignorant, but a fiction built of willful ignorance.

It’s ironic to me to see how the worldwide popularity of Christianity has caused people to be able to justify the most horrid douchebaggery they perpetrate against perceived gay people.  Those of you who believe in your hearts that gayness is sin need to understand that these discriminatory beliefs you hold, no matter how forcefully you act upon them (or not, as the case may be), transform our culture into one where such evil is seemingly acceptable and entertaining.

To simply believe the wrongness of homosexuality is not benign, it is a tacit acceptance that LGBT people are second class and lesser in value.

(Hat tip to my buddy, Travis.)
