We’ve got no money for Social Security, Medicare, SNAP, education, or early childhood…

…but we can give away millions to NASCAR, billions to energy companies (who are already making tens of billions in profit), and now 429 million dollars for Facebook. (Which also made a billion dollars.)

We’re number one, America.  Aren’t you proud?

What a douche.

    My unpopular opinion on taxes.

This so-called ‘Grand Bargain’ is going to leave a lot of Democrats with buyers’ remorse, I think.  With that said, we as a people don’t seem to understand that there’s a cost to being an American citizen beyond the civilian and military lives spent defending our freedom.  The benefits we get cost money, and eventually, we the people have to pay for them.

Freedom, police and fire services, working roads, bridges, clean air and water, regulated energy, military protection, and US markets are not free. (Unless you’re Mitt Romney and were allowed to abuse charitable donations to negate your personal tax burden.) Taxes and a strong central government are what keeps us from becoming Somalia.

I fully support higher taxes as part of the solution.  (Just not in the middle of a recession.)

    more-commonsense:

Face it:
The mainstream media are owned and financed by billionaires.
Romney/Ryan are offering massive tax cuts to billionaires.
Every journalist is scared of losing his or her job.
They aren’t going to come down on the side of Democrats.
Not if they know what’s good for them.
Yes, I know FOX has had their 1984 doublespeak rhetoric going for 16 years that says nearly exactly the opposite.  That does not change the basic facts of who owns and therefore controls mainstream news.
Jon Stewart’s assessment of FOX News:  You’d think that FOX was run by a former Republican operative or someth… “  Then he sees a picture of Roger Ailes, chief of Fox News and former Republican operative.
Every time, recently that Americas have needed to know the truth to make basic decisions that could help or destroy our very way of life, Mainstream News fails us. That has been true during recent elections and during run up to the last two wars.
No doubt, when the decision to invade Iran comes we will be left out of the loop, fed propaganda carefully crafted using Karl Rove’s focus grouped propaganda machine once again.
And an honest evaluation by Mainstream News will once again be MIA.

What’s ironic is that Obama and Biden have supported the same massive tax cuts that have been running our country into the ground for the majority of the last decade, and folks on Tumblr just conveniently ignore it.

I keep seeing folks complaining about ‘their money’ being used to fund programs they dislike, and you know what?

    Go fuck yourself.

You get value for your tax dollars through roads, bridges, and infrastructure that the state builds and maintains for you.  9-1-1 answers your phone calls. If your house catches on fire, the fire department doesn’t send you a bill when you call them to save your home, possessions, or your little ones.  The military sets up fancy bases and ships to keep your cities and businesses safe.  Should you suffer a catastrophic injury or get laid off, you can get SNAP, WIC, unemployment, or disability.

For a life free of these benefits, and their associated tax burden, we welcome you to move to that tax free African paradise, Somalia. And, for added benefit to you so-called conservatives, they don’t have a central government!

I’ve cared more and more about finding out what’s in Mitt’s taxes since he and his wife decided to emphatically deny any wrongdoing and refuse to release them. There’s got to be something in there that would be even more harmful to his campaign, considering his refusal to release them is already causing some pretty serious damage to his prospects.

My friends, no one thinks that anyone should pay more in taxes than they are legally required to pay.

Most of us do, however, find it a wee bit ridiculous to see someone advocating for a regressive tax plan during a fucking recession when they pay a substantially lower percentage of their income in taxes than the voters they’re courting.

(And said candidate is concealing information from the public to mask the fact that he does, indeed, pay a ridiculously small percentage in taxes in comparison to said voters.)

For those keeping score today, birth control is terrorism and expecting a presidential candidate to not try to sneak into the White House unexamined is McCarthyism.

Not an awesome day for Republican commentary.

If I end up voting for Barack Obama, this will be one of two reasons why.

    Per the NYT:

“That sets up a potentially tricky issue for Republicans. They have said they do not want taxes to go up on anyone while the economy struggles to gain altitude, but under their plan, written by Senator Orrin G. Hatch of Utah, the senior Republican on the Finance Committee, about 13 million families would see their tax refunds reduced, and some would see their taxes increase.”

    ___

In short, tax reductions only matter when they benefit the elite.  As we say with the payroll tax cut, Republicans can and will throw the middle class under the bus. (Or try to pretend that they simply don’t exist, as we saw with Senator “Not Intended to be a Factual Statement” Kyl.)
